Title of Project: Geneseo Rotary Elementary School Reading Program
Avenue of Service: Community Service
Brief description of project: In conjunction with the school principal, Rotarians and Rotarian family member were matched with students at York Elementary School for one-on-one reading times on a weekly basis.
Who and how many benefited from the Project? February-May 2009, six Rotarians met with seventeen students age 6-9 on a weekly basis at York Elementary School for ½ hour per student per week. Both Rotarians and students benefited from this interaction.
Describe how the Club found out about this project: The idea was bantered around with the York Elementary School principal during the Rotary Dictionary distribution in the fall of 2008 as something that could fill a need identified at the school. The program was organized during November and December of 2008 and started officially as of February 1, 2009.
What actions did the members take to accomplish this Project, besides raising funds for this project? There is no cost. It is strictly a regular time commitment by the Rotarians involved. The commitment was scheduling regular weekly time to fit into the class schedules of the students. Orchestration of schedules took about a month of emails back and forth, then all Rotary Participants attended a 1 hour orientation and tour of the school before the program started in earnest.
Was there community involvement? Describe the type of community involvement. This is an interactive program between Rotary and the administration, teachers, and staff teachers at York Elementary School. Interaction occurs on every visit to the school.
When was the project completed or is the project on-going? The project is on-going. We plan to continue it into coming school years. It costs nothing except volunteer time and energy. The commitment of time and energy is ongoing by six Rotarians currently. We are trying to recruit more participation. The school and its students have a need for as many Rotarian participants as possible. Consideration is being given to expanding the program to include Geneseo Central School and Genesee Christian School to make it more geographically friendly to get more Rotarians involved.
